Auburn Community Hospital Celebrates New Women’s Imaging Suite

Kelly Mosher has a unique perspective on the importance of saving women’s lives by utilizing cutting-edge medical technology and early detection for breast cancer.

Not only is she a patient at Auburn Community Hospital, but Kelly also runs the very same testing technology used to detect breast cancer as an Interventional Radiological Technologist.  She knows firsthand how critically important the new Women’s Imaging Suite at ACH is to detecting and defeating cancer.

She is also a former mammographer.

“Auburn Community Hospital has done it again by keeping their pulse on what our community needs by building this beautiful Women’s Health center. I’m so proud to be an employee here.

It is so nice to have one-stop shopping, have your mammogram, and get quick results. I’ve worked at many different hospitals. This is the nicest women’s center,” said Mosher at the celebratory ribbon cutting for not one, but two new GE Pristina Full Field Digital Mammography Systems at Auburn Community Hospital.

She was joined by ACH President and CEO Scott Berlucchi, Board of Trustees Chairman Tony Franceschelli, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jamie Syrett, Radiology Department Chairman Dr. Jubin Jacob, and Medical Executive Committee President Dr. Alan Sherburne.

“This is a dream come true. This is our commitment to strengthening women’s health services. It’s part of a much larger campaign to bring comprehensive women’s health close to home.  That’s the goal. To get all testing done at the same time so you can sit with your family and determine what your best treatment options are,” said Berlucchi.

“Every day we’re fighting for Auburn and Cayuga County, and our patients. That’s what it’s all about. I was born and raised here in Auburn, and have family here, and we want this hospital to be the best that it can be. And it is, and it gets better every day,” said Mr. Franceschelli.

What separates the new GE mammography technology at Auburn Community Hospital and other healthcare institutions is that it is not only a patient-centered design, but also provides physicians a crystal clear 3D image with one of the lowest patient radiation doses.

“Every little detail is looked at. We are focused on getting patients in, providing an accurate and timely diagnosis, and giving people the treatment that they require right here in Auburn,” said Auburn Community Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jamie Syrett.

It is especially precise in providing accurate images of women with dense breast tissue.

“These are state-of-the-art machines. We do 3D topographic views first, and then we use the same raw data and make 2D views out of it. That means you don’t have to get radiated twice. It minimizes the amount of radiation.”

“We’re all in this together. It’s a collaborative effort. We also have a team of experienced and dedicated staff and technologists that do a great job in getting the best pictures possible,” added Dr. Jacob.

Another added benefit of the new Women’s Imaging Suite at Auburn Community Hospital is a quicker turnaround time on test results for patients. Gone are the days of waiting weeks or up to one month for definitive results on whether or not a patient has cancer.

“The anxiety can be awful. The quicker we can determine that there might be a problem, figuring out what needs to be done, is so important. What truly matters is getting the right diagnosis. If you stage things appropriately, it leads to better outcomes. Thank you to all who brought this technology here. We are very happy to have it,” added Dr. Sherburne.

Another benefit of the new technology in the ACH Women’s Imaging Suite is that healthcare providers can pinpoint potential cancer growth without the typical surgical biopsy, which uses a needle and is more invasive.

The new technology was also created by GE to improve patient comfort.

“Ladies, get your screenings,” concluded Mosher.
