Auburn Community Hospital Auxiliary partners with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Provide Children’s Books to Young Families
(June 5, 2012, Auburn NY) – The Auburn Community Hospital Auxiliary is helping the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Success by 6 Program in Cayuga County by donating Children’s Books to every newborn. With their support, along with the staff in the Stardust Community Birthing Center, all newborns are enrolled in the program. Moms receive the first book, The Little Engine That Could to take home to begin their very own personal library with their child. The program builds early skills and awareness so that children in our community have a strong start in literacy.
“Once babies leave the hospital with their families it takes triple the effort by the community to enroll them in a program such as this. This early connection is so helpful to us and more importantly to the young families. We don’t want to wait until preschool before they are enrolled or even worse find out in Kindergarten that we missed them.” said Nancy Tehan of the Success by 6 program. “We are very thankful for this opportunity to not only enroll babies but to be able to give them their first book.”
The program delivers a new book every month to enrollees in the program. The Auburn Community Hospital Auxiliary supported this effort for three years for all mothers that deliver at the Stardust Community Birthing Center as part of the Maternity Initiative. “Reading to a baby early and often is a powerful experience for both mother and child,” said Judith Santillo, ACH Director of Volunteer Services and Auxiliary Member. “Auburn Community Hospital Auxiliary believes by supporting the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, every baby born at ACH will have the opportunity to become lifelong learners with a love of reading.”
Those that are interested in learning more about the Imagination Library are encouraged to contact The Stardust Community Birthing Center at (315) 255-7381 or the Success by 6 program at (315) 255-2746.
